We investigate Lopia, the most competitive supermarket in Japan, located in Niiza City, Saitama Prefecture. Whole eel sushi for 1,598 yen! A whole 4cm thick piece of roast pork for 670 yen! A huge selection of unbelievably priced and voluminous side dishes. Huge queues at the fresh fish counter! A sushi buffet with huge portions. Eels in the deli counter vs. eels in the fresh fish counter!? The counters compete for customers and go head to head. A huge queue next to the meat counter! Lopia Niiza sells flash-frozen Lopia pizza (only four stores in the Kanto region). Truffle risotto for 599 yen is available for tasting in the studio. The most popular frozen side dish, “Beef Rundan Curry,” invented by a former head chef of the Japanese Embassy in India, costs 486 yen per bag.
A hot topic on social media! Large-capacity sweets. Vanilla bean scented pudding, milk jelly, and fruit salad are very popular. “Pure white shortcake” made only with cream and sponge.
Lopia was originally founded as a butcher shop, and offers rare cuts such as Chateaubriand and kaimomi, as well as seven types of tongue alone. Lopia’s unique feature is that it has many products that other supermarkets cannot imitate, such as extremely cheap meat.
