On October 8, the environmental NGO Protect Our Winters Japan (POW JAPAN) published full-page newspaper advertisements in the Hokkaido Shimbun and Shinano Mainichi Shimbun newspapers that read, “If the snow disappears, we all lose.” At the same time, 110 companies jointly published a proposal calling for policies in line with the 1.5℃ target. A message was sent regarding the 7th Basic Energy Plan being promoted by the Japanese government.
Companies that support POW JAPAN include Patagonia, The North Face, Burton, Goldwyn, and KEEN. Other supporters include Hakuba Village and ski resorts across Japan. Athletes such as snowboarders and skiers also support the initiative.
This newspaper ad points out that “If the snow disappears, everyone loses,” not just for outdoor sports, but also for farmers who need snowmelt water, the Japanese economy as a whole, and even life and society. He advocated three things: understanding the impacts of climate change, calling for policies in line with the “1.5℃ goal,” and supporting companies and politicians who actively promote climate change countermeasures.
