Times Higher Education World University Rankings. If you pick up Japanese universities and arrange them side by side, the former imperial universities are at the top. The university, which was established by the Imperial University Ordinance of 1886, still has outstanding power even after more than 130 years.

According to the World University Rankings 2023 published by the British educational magazine Times Higher Education (THE), the only two Japanese universities in the top 200 are Tokyo University at 39th and Kyoto University at 68th. Both ranked lower than the previous year.
British and American universities dominated the top 10, with Oxford University (UK) in first place and Harvard University (US) in second place. Among Asian countries, China’s Tsinghua University and Peking University ranked 16th and 17th respectively. There are 11 Chinese universities in the top 200, and six South Korean universities, including Seoul National University, are in the top 200.
In Japan, besides the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, Tohoku University ranked 201-250, Osaka University ranked 251-300, Nagoya University ranked 301-350, and Tokyo Institute of Technology ranked 301-350. (The 201st to 400th places will be announced together in 50th place)
