[Selected by riders who travel around Japan]10 Recommended Touring Roads in Kyushu – Webike Plus

Hello to everyone viewing Webike Plus! A man who runs less than 200km a day, a rider.

Of course, I like riding a motorcycle, but I also like eating local gourmet food, drinking coffee at cafes, trekking, and walking around town. doing.

However, there are many roads in Kyushu that make me think, “I want to keep running here!

So, I will introduce the recommended touring roads in Kyushu, which I have already completed two laps of Japan on a motorcycle.

* Information on each spot is as of November 2022. Information posted is subject to change without notice. Please check in advance when you go out.

1 Fukuoka Prefecture: Uminonakamichi

Uminonakamichi (Prefectural Route 59) is an 8km road that connects Fukuoka City and Shikanoshima Island.

With a maximum width of about 2.5km, the road runs through a huge sandbar, and you can enjoy riding on both sides with the exhilarating feeling of the sea.

The biggest advantage is that you can go on a day trip from Fukuoka city.

Sasu rider’s one point advice

On Shikanoshima, which is located at the end of Uminonakamichi, there is “Kinin Park” which is irresistible for history lovers.

This is the place where the “Golden Seal” engraved with the words “King of the Han Committee”, which everyone must have learned in school days, was discovered.

Both the entrance fee and the parking lot are free, so let’s go to Shikanoshima Landing Memorial.

2 Nagasaki Prefecture: Nita Pass Circular Road

In Nagasaki Prefecture, the Nita-toge Circular Road is a 12-kilometer pass that straddles Unzen City and Minamishimabara City.

Originally it was operated as a toll road, but it was made free in 2009 and continues to this day (voluntary cooperation fee: 100 yen for motorcycles).

Due to the steep slope and narrow width of the road, it cannot be called an “easy road”, but the dynamic view from the “Second Observatory” is a must-see!

Sasu rider’s one point advice

If you ride a motorcycle for about 10 minutes from the Nita Pass loop road, you will reach Unzen Onsen, which is located at an altitude of around 700m.

Unzen Jigoku, where the smell of sulfur and steam blowing out is likened to hell, and Unzen Shinyu Onsenkan, a hot spring where you can enter for only 200 yen, are must-see points.

By the way, you can park your motorcycle in a public parking lot for 200 yen.

3 Nagasaki Prefecture: Kawauchi Pass

Hirado Island, which floats in the northwestern part of Nagasaki Prefecture, is a long, narrow island connected to the mainland by the Hirado Ohashi Bridge.

The scenic road on Hirado Island is “Kawauchi Pass”, and the approximately 2km section near the pass is an outstanding feeling of openness!

The first half and the second half of the road feel like a dense forest road, but suddenly the view opens and the moment you can see the sea comes.

Sasu rider’s one point advice

Hirado Island, where Kawauchi Pass is located, is a rare place where you can see a temple and a church at the same time.

The place named “Scenery with temples and churches” is where you can see Hirado Xavier Memorial Church, Komyo-ji Temple, and Zuiun-ji Temple at the same time.

The scenery is unique to Nagasaki Prefecture, where Christian culture has taken root, so be sure to visit this place when you run Kawauchi Pass.

4 Oita and Kumamoto Prefectures: Yanamami Highway

The Yanamami Highway (Prefectural Route 11) is a scenic road that connects Yufuin, a popular hot spring town in Oita Prefecture, and Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, which is known as the sacred place for western riders.

It’s a road that you can enjoy a variety of rides, such as pleasant straights and winding roads that are extremely rewarding.

It connects two scenic spots, the Kuju Mountain Range and Aso, and there are many leisure spots and restaurants in the surrounding area.

Sasu rider’s one point advice

I’m a genuine cafe boy who spends more time drinking coffee than riding my bike, but there is a cafe on Yamanami Highway that makes me groan.

That is “Chez Tanise no Motokogen branch” in Oita Prefecture, and the level of coffee and cakes is quite high!

It is recommended because you can spend an elegant time while gazing at the spectacular view of Aso outside the window.

5 Kumamoto Prefecture: Milk Road

Like Yamanami Highway, “Milk Road” is a road where you can enjoy the superb view of Aso.

It runs on the 45km long road that runs on the ridge of Aso’s outer rim and connects “Prefectural Roads 339, 12, and 45”.

It is an exhilarating road that runs through a vast grassland area, and the corners are generally gentle, so even beginners can enjoy it!

Sasu rider’s one point advice

In the middle of Milk Road, if you use National Route 212 and go down to the lower world, you will reach the popular hot spring resort “Aso Uchinomaki Hot Spring Village”.

The cream puffs of the sweets shop Patisserie Aso Miyuki, which is located there, are exquisite, so I would like you to try them.

In addition, the level of gelato and cakes is generally high, so let’s enjoy it in the eat-in space.

6 Kumamoto Prefecture: Tawarayama Pass (Minami Aso Yasuragi Road)

Tawarayama Pass is a road called “Minami Aso Yasuragi Road” that runs along the outer rim of Minami Aso.

Since the “Tawarayama Tunnel” was completed in 2003 on Prefectural Route 28, which runs parallel to the road, it has been treated as an “old road”. !

However, the road width is generally narrow and the curves are tight, so be careful when driving looking away.

Sasu rider’s one point advice

Another reason why we recommend the old road is the superb view that can be seen from the Tawarayama Pass Observatory in the middle of the road!

The combination of Aso Gogaku and rural scenery is beautiful and cannot be seen on Prefectural Route 28.

What’s more, there are few people who go out of their way to go along the old road, so it’s a little-known scenic spot with few people even on weekends.

7 Kumamoto Prefecture: Hitoyoshi Loop Bridge

“Hitoyoshi Loop Bridge” is a loop bridge on National Route 221 that connects “Ebino City” in Miyazaki Prefecture and “Hitoyoshi City” in Kumamoto Prefecture.

With a total length of 1,190m, it is a huge loop bridge that draws a beautiful arc, so it is a bridge that you can enjoy just by looking at it!

In fact, there is a parking lot near the viewpoint on the bridge, so you can park your bike there and take pictures.

Sasu rider’s one point advice

“Hitoyoshi City”, located beyond the Hitoyoshi loop bridge, is a town famous for its local gourmet “Hitoyoshi dumplings”.

There are many Hitoyoshi gyoza restaurants in the city, but my recommendation is Shoryuken!

You can eat as many of these light, bite-sized dumplings as you like, so additional orders tend to be endless.

8 Kumamoto Prefecture: Amakusa Pearl Line

The “Amakusa Pearl Line” is the road to Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, where Christian culture still remains strong.

It is a 17km long road that stretches from Uki City to Amakusa City, and is characterized by crossing five bridges called Tenmon Bridge, Oyano Bridge, Nakano Bridge, Maejima Bridge, and Matsushima Bridge.

You can enjoy a comfortable seaside run while looking at Amakusa’s complex rias coast and small islands.

Sasu rider’s one point advice

After driving the Amakusa Pearl Line, stop by the Amakusa Shiro Museum, a museum dedicated to the Christian hero Shiro Amakusa.

You can learn about the person named Shiro Amakusa, who led the Shimabara Rebellion, and about the introduction of Christianity and Nanban culture.

I believe that learning about the culture and history that lies ahead on a motorcycle is the real pleasure of touring.

9 Kagoshima Prefecture: Sakurajima Lava Road

National Route 224, which runs along the southern perimeter of Kagoshima Prefecture’s symbol, Sakurajima, is the Sakurajima Lava Road.

The road is about 13.5km in length, from the intersection with National Route 220 to Sakurajima Port. This is where Hara used to be.

The many rugged black rocks that can be seen while running, and the volcanic plume rising from Sakurajima are impressive roads!

Sasu rider’s one point advice

If you leave Sakurajima and go north on National Route 220, you will arrive at Roadside Station Tarumizu Yuttarikan.

The highlight here is a huge footbath that you can enter while looking at Sakurajima, and you can enter for free!

There are also plenty of restaurants and shops, so we recommend stopping by before entering or after leaving Sakurajima.

10 Kagoshima Prefecture: Kaimon Tunnel

Kaimondake, which is a symbol of Kagoshima Prefecture along with Sakurajima, is one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains near the tip of the Satsuma Peninsula.

A section of the road that goes around Mt. Kaimondake is a tunnel, commonly known as the Kaimon Tunnel.

There are no electric lights inside the tunnel, only the light coming in from the outside illuminates the road. Its unique scenery and view of the world make it a mysterious road that has been called a “haunted spot.”

Sasu rider’s one point advice

Issy other than Nessie exists in Lake Ikeda, a caldera lake about 10 minutes by bike from Mt. Kaimondake? It is said that.

To be honest, it’s a story that has no basis at all, but there is an art object of Isshi proudly displayed on the lakeside, so if you like B-class spots, let’s go there.

The roads of Kyushu are unique!

Of course, the royal road of Aso is good, but there are many unique places such as sandbar roads, huge loop bridges, lava roads, and mysterious tunnels, so you will never get tired of Kyushu roads.

If you’re worried about touring getting stuck in a rut lately, why not take your car and run it on the roads of Kyushu?
