  • What is wheelchair rugby?

Wheelchair rugby was invented in Canada in 1977 by quadriplegic players (those with disabilities due to cervical spinal cord injury, amputation, cerebral palsy, etc.) who were looking for an alternative to wheelchair basketball. .
It is an original sport that combines elements of rugby, basketball, volleyball, ice hockey, etc. It uses an indoor court the size of a basketball and an official ball developed based on the size 5 ball of volleyball. Since contact (tackle) between wheelchairs is permitted, wheelchairs for competition use exclusive wheelchairs that can withstand hard play.

  • What is the Japan Wheelchair Rugby Federation (JWRF)?

The sport was officially introduced to Japan in November 1996 after the Atlanta Paralympics, and the Japan Wheelchair Rugby Federation (at that time) was established in April 1997. The Japanese national team made its first appearance at the 2000 Athens Paralympic Games, and since then has participated in all Paralympic Games, winning bronze medals at the Rio and Tokyo Paralympics. Currently, we are working to popularize the sport in Japan and win gold medals at international competitions such as the Paralympics and world championships.
